Summary:
Douglas McGlothlin, 47 of Alsip, IL, and Fredrick Frank Masters III, 23, of Oak Lawn, IL, were arrested after it was discovered they were storing 55-gallon barrels of magnesium nitrate in a warehouse in Gary, Indiana. The men are not under regulation for handling chemicals of this nature, and the warehouse itself is not equipped to store the material safely. Both men have been charged with one count each of criminal recklessness and illegal[ly] dumping a hazardous material according to Gary Police Cpl. Joseph Pops. McGlothlin was also charged with driving without a commercial license. Officials are reportedly still looking into additional state and federal charges. Magnesium Nitrate is used in the Steel Industry, and can react violently when exposed to water. The Gary Director of Environmental Affairs Dorreen Carey is reported as saying there are homes within a half-mile of the warehouse. “I didn’t want to see all those people’s lives at risk,” said Jackie Oliver, daughter of the owner of the warehouse. Oliver discovered and reported the barrels when she was checking on a grass fire near the building earlier in the year. At that time the site was investigated and the material was supposedly being sold. McGlothlin and Masters have an August 30th court date.
